** A brief history and selected stories from the game of baseball **

Join Active Minds® as we trace the history of baseball from Abner Doubleday to Barry Bonds. We will tell a few of the legendary stories of the game, including the Merkle Incident, the 1919 Chicago Black Sox, the Curse of the Bambino, and others. We will discuss Jackie Robinson and the role of the Negro Leagues as well as how the modern era has been affected by the use of steroids. Bring your own favorite baseball story to share with the group.

Purchase your beer for our Online Virtual Tasting on June 11th at 6:00pm - Hosted by Nathaniel Miller, Owner and Brewer at Big Choice Brewing, Brewery & Pizzeria. Use the link above to place your order no later that 12:00pm on Thursday, June 11th.  Beers will be delivered to you on the 11th between 3:00pm and 5:00pm. Once you place your order, you will get a confirmation email from Big Choice Brewing giving you the Zoom Conference Information for the tasting.

 

The following Beers in 32oz Crowlers are the ones you will get and what we will discuss that evening:
1.     Quarantine Berries are Blue, Blueberry Wheat: This is an American Style Wheat, that we have added blueberries to that gives it a sweet, but subtle blueberry finish.
2.    #42 Poblano Stout – This is an Oatmeal Stout, that we have added roasted and de-seeded Poblano Peppers to.  It has NO Heat at all.  Light Roast and Smoke forward w/a subtle poblano finish.
3.    Disconnected Red IPA – This is our version of a West Coast IPA.  It is malt forward with a great hop finish.  Not to much of a bite that you would get from other IPA’s.

 

Background on the brewer: Growing up in Boulder, Nathaniel Miller and his family brewed everything from mead to wine to beer.  Initially earning a degree in economics at CU-Boulder, because “hey, who doesn’t need a degree in economics?” and later marrying  his lovely wife, who gave him two awesome kids, Miller’s parents asked if he might be interested in home brewing beer and splitting the batches with them. Intrigued by the idea of having an unlimited supply of beer at his fingertips, he earned his “beer degree” by way of $3 in late fees at the Stanley Lake Library.  Nathaniel has a great knack for easily absorbing information and retaining it like nobody’s business; which explains the constant spewing of random facts that no one else seemingly knows.  Shortly thereafter, he started home brewing with extract, but soon turned to all grain batches.  His own home-brew setup was built using SolidWorks, and using 3d modeled sheet metal from his parents precision sheet metal shop in Longmont.  What started as brewing batches once or twice a month, grew to one or twice a week. In 2008, around the time Upslope was breaking ground, and there were less than half of the number of breweries that exist today, Miller approached his close childhood friend, Tyler Ruse, with the idea of opening up their own brewery.  A few years later, in 2012, a building was found in Broomfield, CO, and it is there that he made his dream come true…brew the beer he likes to drink, while listening to the music he likes to listen to.
 

Summer Concert Series –Mango Salsa

Come join us for our first official concert of our Summer Concert Series! Mango Salsa will be set up on the sidewalk near the Clubhouse and residents are invited to drive, cart and walk on up to enjoy some great tunes! We do ask that people maintain their proper social distancing, wear masks where necessary and those who are higher risk, attend and remain in their vehicle where possible. We are working with Zingers, the new name of the restaurant here in HTC, to get a beverage cart in the parking lot for fast drink service. We are also encouraging residents to visit the Snack Bar window for beverages and food alike!

Join us as we partner with Vegas Pub Quiz for 60’s Music themed Bingo!

 

Here’s how it works: those wanting to participate must RSVP to the Front Desk as spots are limited, cut off for RSVP’s is Tuesday, June 16th at 5:00pm. When you RSVP, we will need the following information: Your name, phone number (just in case we have delivery issues, or questions), your address (so we know where to drop the cards) and how many people in your home are going to play (each participant will get one sheet with two cards which will be used for the whole game.) On Wednesday, we will be dropping off the Bingo cards on participant’s porches. If you RSVP’d and do not have your cards prior to 5:00pm, please contact the Front Desk to let us know. At 6:00pm, we will begin the Bingo via Zoom!

 

A list of winners will be given to Heather to distribute the prizes.
