National Houseplant Appreciation Day
Tuesday, January 10th, 2023, 2pm to 4pm at Lobby

The holidays are over and our homes looks a little sad once the decorations and trees are put away. If you have the post-holiday blues, this is the perfect chance for you to brighten up your house with a lovely plant that you can enjoy all year long! Join us in the Clubhouse Lobby from 2 to 4 PM as we celebration National Houseplant Appreciation Day with free starter houseplants while supplies last!
Houseplants do more than just bring a splash of green into our homes, and National Houseplant Appreciation Day is all about raising awareness of the numerous benefits of tending an indoor plant. Houseplants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen for us to breathe, improving the air quality in your home. Plants also release moisture into the air, conditioning it with refreshing humidity that can actually make your house feel cooler. Plus houseplants make wonderful roommates—they’re quiet, easy to care for, and fun to look at! Whether your green thumb has driven you to amass an impressive indoor garden or you’re just kicking around the idea of a low-maintenance cactus for your desk, it’s time to roll up your sleeves and join us in bringing the outdoors inside on National Houseplant Appreciation Day.
National Houseplant Appreciation Day Activities
- Get a houseplant —and appreciate it! After the wreaths and holly of the holidays, our wintertime houses can seem a little dreary. National Houseplant Appreciation Day is the perfect opportunity to pick up some greenery that will brighten up your home year-round. If you already have a houseplant, try moving it to a new place in your home. The change will refresh your attention so you can appreciate your plant more. Just make sure the plant's new position gets the same amount of light!
- Decorate your houseplant - The holiday season is over, but you can still enjoy a decorated plant in your home. Put your houseplant in an eye-catching place and spruce it up (no pun intended). If your plant is sturdy enough, you can hang beads, ornaments, or even jewelry from it. For more flexible plants, try crepe paper or ribbon, and on non-edible plants, tinsel or glitter make fun alternatives. Worried about damaging your houseplant? Decorate the dirt at the base of your plant with plastic cake decorations, or give the outside of the soil pot a makeover.
- Visit a plant nursery - There are plenty of baby plants in grocery stores that are looking for a good home, but the folks at a nursery will be able to help you pick a houseplant that is right for you. All plants need sunlight, water, and nutrients; however, the amount of each differs between plants. A sunny window ledge with daily water is perfect for certain plants, while others prefer more dappled sunlight and water once a week. With an idea of where you'd like to put your plant and how often you'd like to care for it, the experts at your local nursery will be able to match you up with the perfect houseplant.

Mixed media offers a multitude of options and provides an open opportunity for creativity and fun. Come meet Elaine Riley, a long-time mixed media artist and teacher, in this 3 hour workshop to create a mixed media collage art journal. You will learn the various techniques for collage, stencil use, stamping, mark making, found poetry, and more. Products will be demonstrated and discussed and you will leave having new art skills and how to tell your story in collage. No experience is necessary and those of you with mixed media experience will learn some things to add to your creative list.
This journal will be a place to experiment, express, play, tell your stories, use new art products, for soul-searching, and create daily or as often as you want. Writing is done below the layers and more layers of creative goodness. It’s here and you know it is and while the writing is, for some people, key, it’s not necessarily “the star” in this process. You are the creator.
The following is a list of materials that will be used during the workshop. Please bring your own mixed media art journal and basic craft paints so you can continue your work/journal at home. Other paints will also be available to share.
All other materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own personal/preferred art supplies, memorabilia, photos, papers, colors or trimmings you like, charms, magazine pictures, etc. Anything that can be glued to paper. I would suggest that if you are going to use photos, print copy them onto paper as the printer paper will blend into your collage better than photo paper. Inkjet printer is fine – nothing special is needed.
This class is fun way to jump start your creative spirit in the new year with new ideas, skills and friends!
Please bring:
- Canson XL Mixed Media notebook, 7” x 10”, 98 lb paper.
- 6-8 colors of craft paint + black and white
Other Class Materials Provided:
- 2 Brushes – inexpensive, Chip brushes, sizes ranging from 2 to 2 ½”
- Scissors
- Pens/pencils/markers
- Collage parts – photos, words, stickers, stamps, stencils, papers, etc. (Bring your favorites/memorabilia and other materials also provided.)
- Water container to clean brushes
- Wet wipes and/or a rag/hand towel to dry brushes and for quick clean ups
About your instructor, Elaine Riley
“I have been an artist most of my life. I believe that creativity is as necessary as breathing and the community that develops from art is a gift.
“Teaching workshops and meeting other artist is the way I have grown into my art and have found a place to enjoy life. Originally from Houston, Texas, I now live in Broomfield, Colorado and have retired from a professional career to become a fulltime artist. My area of work is mixed media collage, watercolor, art journaling, and Zen Line Drawing (Zentangle inspired).”
